First Two Weeks of Class -- Solar System Astr B3
Here's the schedule for the two weeks of the Solar System class for the waitlisted students.
Week 1
- Astronomy B3 Solar System video orientation (this is the primary orientation for the class).
- Week 1 Reading: Astronomy Notes ch.1 (scale of things + science method) , skim ch.2 (scientific method) , and carefully read ch. 3 through 3.6 (star and sun motions, seasons). Semester starts!
- Week 1 in class:
- First Day of class! (no shows will be dropped.) If no face-to-face class meeting, send Prof Strobel an email by 2:30 PM on the FIRST day of class with the subject line "Enrollment sheet for waitlisted student" and answer the following four questions:
- Name (give name listed in the class roster AND any preferred nickname).
- Phone number where I can leave a message.
- Why you are taking the class (be honest--if you're taking it just to fulfill the science requirement, that's good for me to know).
- Eventual job or career goal after you're done with college and how BC will help you achieve that job/career goal.
- Second day of class: Path of the Sun tutorial (p. 35-38 in the Student Guide). Sky reference points and star + Sun motions on the dome---doors locked during that part! Be sure to have studied section 3.4 of the textbook very carefully before doing the tutorial! If you don't have the Student Guide yet, click the tutorial link to download a PDF copy to your computer and print it. The tutorial is also in the In-Class Worksheet packet PDF posted in the top (first) module of the Canvas site.
- Sun path tutorial questions build on each other logically to lead you to be able to answer questions 15 to 19 at the end using conclusions drawn from previous 14 questions.
