Eight-one artists with 10 students each carved the figures. The artists had to put their signatures on the belts of the figures they carved. This enabled their masters to find out who carved which particular figurine so that if it was not accurate, the particular artist could be identified and disciplined. The headless figure shows that the figurines are hollow (but the legs are solid) and that the head piece was made separately from the rest of the body. They are made of the local terra cotta clay.
