Xuanzang statue in the Northern Square of Da Ci'en Temple complex. Xuangzang had 50 hierarchs working with him to translate the Buddhist sutras written in Sanskrit into Chinese. There were 1,335 volumes of sutras translated by this effort. Xuanzang is also said to have written a book "Pilgrimage [or Journey] to the West" about his 17-year journey to India and back. However, the book was more likely written by Wu Cheng'en who lived around 1500-1582 CE, during the Ming Dynasty.
