First Two Weeks of Class -- Science of the Cosmos Astr B1

Here's the schedule for the two weeks of the Science of the Cosmos class for the waitlisted students.

Week 1

• Astronomy B1 Science of the Cosmos video orientation (this is the primary orientation for the class).
• Week 1 Reading: Astronomy Notes ch.1 (scale of things + science method) , skim ch.2 (scientific method) , and ch. 7 (electromagnetic radiation). Semester starts!
• Week 1 in class:
  • First Day of class! (no shows will be dropped.) If no face-to-face class meeting, send Prof Strobel an email by 2:30 PM on the FIRST day of class with the subject line "Enrollment sheet for waitlisted student" and answer the following four questions:
    1. Name (give name listed in the class roster AND any preferred nickname).
    2. Phone number where I can leave a message.
    3. Why you are taking the class (be honest--if you're taking it just to fulfill the science requirement, that's good for me to know).
    4. Eventual job or career goal after you're done with college and how BC will help you achieve that job/career goal.
  • Second day of class: Finish introduction material. Start Electromagnetic Radiation (Light) chapter 7 material.
• Homework #1 due on Friday! (Worth 9 pts plus 2 pts extra credit)
  • This homework assignment is on the class Canvas. Waitlisted students in the face-to-face class will already be added to the class by Friday. Students still waitlisted in the online asynchronous class will have an extended due time.
  • Assignment covered in concepts 1 to 3 of Exam#1 review sheets in your Student Guide (starting on page 7).

Week 2 Science of the Cosmos Astr B1

• Week 2 Reading: Astronomy Notes ch. 7 (electromagnetic radiation) and ch. 8 (telescopes)
• Week 2 in class:
  • Monday: Types of Spectra tutorial in class (p. 35-36 of Student Guide). Select the link to download a copy if you do not have the Student Guide yet. Online class: Take a picture of the two sides of the filled out tutorial with your phone and email me the pictures.
  • Wednesday: Quiz #1 at end of class (asynchronous online class: see syllabus for due time but you should be enrolled by this Wednesday). One question on Quiz #1 covers the Great Expectations article on pages 1 and 2 of the Student Guide (or select link to version on Astronomy Notes site). Note that Homework #4 next week is due on MONDAY -- you can always do it early. See Telescope lecture slides for all the information you need to do the HW 4 assignment.
• Light + Spectroscopy Lecture Outline (PDF)

• Homework 2 (Worth 9 pts)
  • This homework assignment is on the class Canvas. Students still waitlisted in the online asynchronous class will have an extended due time.
  • Assignment covered in concepts 4 to 15 of Exam#1 review sheets in your Student Guide. Also see the vocabulary terms on the first two pages of the Exam#1 review sheets.
• Homework 3 (Worth 12 pts plus 2 pts extra credit)
  • This homework assignment is on the class Canvas. Students still waitlisted in the online asynchronous class will have an extended due time.
  • Assignment covered in concepts 4 to 21 of Exam#1 review sheets in your Student Guide. Also see the vocabulary terms on the first two pages of the Exam#1 review sheets.
• Telescopes Lecture Outline (PDF)
• Quiz #1 at end of class: Quiz#1 Work with a partner on the quiz. Open notes, open book. Example exam questions!
