Each of the cocoons is made of a single strand of silk thread 300 to 900 meters long. There is a glue on the cocoon that makes it about as hard as a piece of a styrofoam cup. That glue has to be dissolved away by boiling water. It takes about 2000 to 3000 cocoons to make a pound of silk.
