All that is left of the 50-inch reflector (Great Melbourne Telescope) originally built in 1868 near Melbourne. It was rebuilt with a new mirror in 1955 on Mt Stromlo and rebuilt again in the 1980s for the MACHO project (Massive Compact Halo Objects microlensing survey). It was completely automated in 2000 for the search for Kuiper Belt objects (small solar system bodies beyond Neptune).
