Strangler Fig in Cairns

Strangler Fig Tree begins reaching for the ground in the rainforest outside of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. A bird will drop the fig seed in a fork of a tree. When the seed sprouts, its roots start reaching for the ground. Once the roots reach the ground, the fig tree then grows around its host tree, eventually strangling it. The next picture shows a Strangler Fig in a more advanced stage; its host tree now dead. Mosaic of pictures taken in July 2006. This image is 45% size of the original.
